Meet The Founder

I didn't set out to be a dog hotelier.

I grew up on a working cattle ranch in the Willamette Valley in Oregon. Cows, horses, sheep, chickens and turkeys, and of course a LOT of dogs were my childhood companions. I guess a lot of little girls dream of becoming a veterinarian at some point, and I was no exception.

When I got to college I sidetracked into Political Science, then explored consumer product sales & marketing, and finally ended up in California, with a job in sales for the high tech industry. This meant a lot of travel, which was bad news for my trusty sidekick Daisy the Jack Russell Terrier. Time and again I was forced to board her in anonymous kennels. It never failed – as soon as she saw my suitcase she would hide under the bed and shake, knowing I would be condemning her to another stretch of jail time. Her heart was breaking, and so was mine.

It came to me in 1998 in one of those "a-ha" moments. If I felt this miserable and guilty leaving my little buddy in those places, probably a lot of other people did as well. I finally knew what I had to do. I started planning a dream destination for dogs, where people could feel good leaving their pooches, knowing they would be loved, pampered and cared for.

We opened the first Pooch Hotel in Chicago in August of 2004.

It has always been my dream to bring the Pooch Hotel experience to the Sunshine state I love so much, so in the spring of 2009 we moved the whole family. Husband, Momma, the kids and all four dogs hopped on a plane and headed west. I'm pleased to say we'll be starting the Silicon Valley branch of the Pooch family tree at the end of the summer.

I would like to thank all of our faithful and loyal clients that have helped make Pooch Hotel the family it is today.

Green Initiatives — Serious Solutions to Reduce our Carbon Paw Print

Does luxury have to be a drain on the environment? We don't think so. To reduce our impact and honor the Earth, we've embraced the following initiatives:

Conserving Electricity

  • ENERGY STAR, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver-rated Commercial HVAC systems with air purification
  • Energy efficient, tankless water heaters
  • Rooms are flooded with natural light. Compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs are used for all other lighting needs, reducing electricity consumption by 75% over traditional bulbs.
  • Radiant-heated floors for maximized floor-level comfort while lowering the thermostat

Reducing Chemicals

  • Indoor canine lap pools use natural saline for purification rather than chlorine
  • Earth and pet-friendly products utilized to clean & disinfect wherever possible
  • Central wet/dry vacuum system used for instant cleanup, reducing detergent runoff

Recycling Program

  • Company-wide recycling program for all glass, plastic, and paper
  • All office supplies are made from recycled sources

Earth-friendly Practices

  • Biogradable plastic bags used to ease landfill impact
  • All wood used in finishing is from sustainable sources

We take some simple but necessary precautions for the health and safety of our guests

Dogs entering the Pooch Hotel for any of our services must be current in the following vaccinations and screenings:

  • Distemper/Parvo or proof of titers
  • Rabies if over 5 months of age
  • Bordetella vaccine every 6 months
  • Annual Fecal test
  • Frontline (or similar) monthly flea and tick preventative medication is required

Please have your vet's office call or email us confirmation or bring photocopies upon check-in.
